The flexible Solar PV panels are arranged on the membrane in a way that makes it as easy to install as conventional single ply waterproofing membrane
Solar PV Membranes
Solar PV membranes are available in the form of high performance single ply waterproofing membranes bonded with flexible and lightweight Solar PV panels. They offer reliable protection to a building against the weather and simultaneously enable direct conversion of solar energy into electric power.
Solar PV Membranes - Material
The roofing membrane itself consists of a high polymer alloy of ethylene vinyl acetate terpolymer (EVA) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) a purpose made thermoplastic material. Both components are solids, maintaining optimum properties for a maximum service life. The Solar PV membrane is homogenous with a polyester fleece backing.
Solar PV Membranes - Layout
The flexible Solar PV panels are arranged on the membrane in a way that makes it as easy to install as conventional single ply waterproofing membrane. The main advantage of this type of system is that complex frameworks and additional heavy supports e.g. concrete and gravel ballast, are not necessary.
Solar PV Membranes - Profiles
Multi-purpose waterproofing membranes are suitable for both non-ventilated (warm) and ventilated (cold) roof constructions. It is ideally suited to barrel-vaulted, mono-pitched, double pitched, butterfly and particularly north light roofs with south facing pitched surfaces.
Solar PV Membranes – Industrial and Commercial
Solar PV membranes are suitable for both new building and refurbishment projects. Large low pitched roof areas, in particular those of industrial and commercial buildings, are ideally suited to accept building integrated Solar PV membranes.
Solar PV membranes are laid to falls in order to avoid water ponding. They are normally laid on the central area of the roof (approximately 60 per cent of the roof area), while perimeter and corner zones are covered with standard roofing membrane.
Solar PV Membranes - Cables
During installation, connection cables from the Solar PV panels are hidden beneath the Solar PV membrane. Direct Current (DC) cables are protected from the rain, wind and weather. Inverters with integral mains monitoring devices, along with other electrical components, are fixed to the underside of the roof.
Solar PV Membranes - Installation
Solar PV membranes are installed by trained and licensed roofing contractors. Application is possible in most weather conditions and economical fast-track installations can be achieved.
Thin film technologies reduce the amount of light absorbing material required to create a solar cell. This reduces the cost of the bulk materials and increases the electricity generating efficiency
